Opening ASCII mode data connection. Cannot open data connection. I encountered the above problem when I tried to use passive mode on the command line in Windows. I found the information I wanted by searching the materials: IE usually uses passive mode, while the command line utility (ftp command) always uses active mode. Using any commands such as dir cd or ls causes the Opening ASCII hang up. Using active FTP. Ports 20 and 21 set to allow traffic in both directions. I've tried removing the antivirus and firewalls and connecting, same issue. I've tried connecting with my personal laptop, same issue. Show activity on this post. You have most probably not opened the data connection ports on the firewall of the server (or have not forwarded the ports on NAT, if there's any). Check what ports the FTP server is using and open/forward them. Another problem is, that you have not configured a correct external IP address in the FTP server.
